Rhian Berning is an environmentalist and eco entrepreneur who initiated Eco Atlas, a unique online platform for South Africa which empowers both locals and tourists to make informed choices about where to eat, play and stay based on social and environmental criteria. She strongly believes we should vote with our wallets for change on a grand scale and a viable future for all and Eco Atlas provides the tool to do so. Eco Atlas was awarded runner up in the Green Economy for the Mail & Guardian Greening the Future Awards as well as merit awards in the Eco-Logic Awards for Green Economy two years running. Eco Atlas has also been longlisted for the World Responsible Tourism Awards as well as the African Responsible Tourism Awards. While Rhian studied Environmental Science at UCT with a postgrad in Education she has experience in university lecturing, teacher training, school food gardens, environmental education and environmental project management and consultancy. Her favourite pastime is to sit in her vegetable garden listening to the bees doing their work and watching the plants grow while her children play and look for gooseberries, bliss.
